What is Roof Pitch?

Roof Pitch (or Slope)

Roof pitch measures the steepness or slope of a roof. Roofs are typically categorized as flat or “pitched”. Lower pitched roofs are typically found on commercial properties or modern, contemporary homes. The most common roofs are medium pitched roofs constructed with asphalt shingles. Steeper roofs are typically more expensive due to a slightly more challenging installation.

The pitch of a roof is typically displayed as a fraction or ratio. The first number represents the vertical height and the second number represents the vertical length of the roof. Roof pitches can range from 1/12 to 12/12, but most tend to fall somewhere between 4/12 and 8/12.
