Roofing Square - Roofing Term Meaning 100 Square Feet
By ProMatcher Staff
Roofing square (or per square) is a common roofing terminology. It means "100 square feet." It is used by contractors, suppliers, wholesalers, and manufacturers so that they have a common way to refer to 100 square feet of roofing material.
However, a "square" is not 100 sq.ft. of roofing material, it is the amount of material needed to COVER 100 square feet of roof. Most roofing materials require something known as "headlap" which is where the roof tiles overlap one another. This is done so that water does not leak in between shingles.
Here are a few mathematical examples of how many squares would be needed to cover a specific size roof area:
10 x 10 roof area = 100 square feet (or 1 square) 4 x 25 roof area = 100 square feet (or 1 square) 5 x 20 roof area = 100 square feet (or 1 square)
30 x 50 roof area = 1,500 square feet (or 15 squares) 40 x 60 roof area = 2,400 square feet (or 24 squares)
The terminology is used for ordering and pricing projects. "I need 25 squares of asphalt roof shingles."
Cost per square refers to the cost of each square. For instance, if each square costs $120, then 10 squares would cost $1,200.
