6 Shingle Roofing Cost Factors

1. Type of shingle. When most people think of shingle roofs, they usually think of asphalt shingles. Asphalt shingles are the most common type of roofing in the U.S. Shingles also come in other materials like wood, tile, and slate, all of which are more expensive than standard asphalt.

2. Asphalt shingle material. The most common and least expensive type of shingle is asphalt. Asphalt shingles can also be made of fiberglass, which has a slightly higher price tag.

3. Pitch of the roof. Roofs with steep pitches pose additional challenges for installers. If your home has a steep pitch, plan to pay more for additional safety precautions that may be needed.

4. Shingle style. Most asphalt shingles are either three-tab or architectural. Three-tab shingles come in thin strips and are relatively cheap to install. Architectural shingles may look better because they are thicker, but installation costs more because they must be placed on one by one.

5. Removal of existing roof. It is sometimes possible to install new shingles over the existing layer. But if the underlayment needs to be replaced or if there are already too many layers of shingles, you will need to pay to remove the old layers before the new layer of shingles can be installed.

6. Where you live. The cost of a new shingle roof will depend on your home's geographic location. Labor costs tend to be higher in certain areas of the country.
